Phoenix Contract

Centuries after the fallen angels left heaven to live among humans, their Nephilim descendants dwell in secret, hidden from the modern world. Once, a charismatic leader known as the Phoenix led their people, but he vanished centuries ago. The few surviving Great Houses are in decline, bickering over petty rivalries while a handful of faithful warriors battle to keep the forces of evil at bay.
Eighteen-year-old Aiden McLachlan devotes her life to her studies and pursues her lifelong goal to become a full-fledged Watcher. But everything she knows of her life is a lie and everyone a liar. Through a strange twist of fate, she finds herself caught up in an ancient prophecy.

The stars predict the rebirth of the Nephilim leader, but the mystery must be unraveled or the Phoenix cannot rise. With a soul-eating demon, a coven of ancient vampires, and a hardheaded Celtic warrior competing to subvert the Phoenix, Aiden doesn't know where to turn or who she can trust.

He’d always had the worst of luck, and the day he died was no different.
Thrash stared into the chasm of space between the building roof and city streets, contemplating the eighty-story drop. It was a long way down. The city’s lights glimmered against darkness, millions of fluorescent stars. Surrender did not come easily to him, and it tasted bitter in his mouth. He’d spent his life training to fight, but what could he do against an enemy that could shape shift at will?
Six-foot-six and muscular in the manner of body builders, Thorton David Aston III or Thrash to his friends, was an albino. He was born without skin or hair pigment, his skin perfectly pale, his hair white. He rivaled the city lightscape for its clean brightness. He disliked the attention his condition attracted, so he’d cropped his hair short and dyed it metallic blue.
Thrash’s athletic body thrummed with tension. Perspiration beaded on his pale forehead and made his palms clammy.
The Soul Eater was coming for him.

“I won’t help you,” Matthew said, “no matter what you do to me.”
“Oh, but I think you will,” Daniel disagreed. “Once I turn you, then you’ll be more than happy to help.” Lightning swift, the vampire lashed out and seized Matthew’s wrist, forcing the priest’s arm down.
Matthew cried out in pain as Daniel squeezed his wrist until his hand opened and the crucifix dropped to the ground.
Aiden shouted and swung her crucifix around to protect Matthew, but she was too slow. Daniel dragged Matthew away and thrust the priest toward his minions.
“Hold him,” Daniel said.
Immediately, the carrot-topped boy and the policewoman caught hold of the priest.
Aiden expected Daniel’s attack, but that didn’t prepare her for the vampire’s speed. Daniel rushed her, progressing so fast his contorted face filled her vision. She kept the crucifix level and aimed for the vampire’s eyes, but Daniel caught hold of her wrist with disturbing ease. Then he twisted her arm, causing a wrenching pain in her shoulder. Against her will, Aiden bent over to avoid having her arm torn from the socket. She lost her grip on her crucifix.
“Let her go!” Matthew shouted. “She’s done nothing.”
Daniel immobilized Aiden, ignoring her struggles. He forced her head to the side and exposed her throat. “Oh, I don’t think so. I want you to suffer, Matt,” he said. “As a self-styled Lord of the Night, I’m rather pleased with the revenge I’ve concocted. So I’m going to eat your pretty daughter and make you watch.”

Heart and Sole by Miranda Liasson

Heart and Sole
by Miranda Liasson
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: July 14, 2015

Getting even.
One step at a time...

Maddie Kingston just walked away from everything in order to take over her family's struggling shoe business. And she's in some serious trouble. The majority of the company's shares have been bought out by none other than Maddie's ex-boyfriend, self-made billionaire Nick Holter. Now Maddie needs his help...even if it means buying Nick from a charity bachelor auction.

After the Kingstons destroyed his grandfather's career, Nick vowed to take over their company. He's inches from victory when he finds himself bought and paid for...by his sexy ex-girlfriend who's hell-bent on saving her family's company. Between their families' feud and their own unfinished business, tempers - and emotions - run hot. Too hot.

Because kissing with the enemy is a guaranteed shoe-in for trouble...

“So what on earth happened?” Doris literally sat on the edge of her canvas outdoor chair.

Maddie cleared her throat. She sucked in a big, deep breath. But no words formed.

Nick cleared his throat. “Yes, well, our families saw our happiness and decided to end their feud.”

Nick stood and placed his arms on his hips, assuming the tone and inflection of an actor. He was good. Really good. “I took Maddie back home and I said, ‘Gramps, Maddie’s the love of my life. Now, I know you haven’t been talking to your old friend, and our families completely ignore one another when they pass on the street, but time’s up and that baloney’s got to end.’ Then I took her in my arms like this—” Nick pulled Maddie up, grabbed her around the waist and dipped her low—“and I said, ‘Sweetheart, it’s up to you and me to bring our families back together. Full circle. ’Cause that’s what love does.’”

He eased her up slowly, the taut cords of his arm muscles pulling, pulling. His warm brown eyes stared into hers, and she went limp under his touch. He smelled of campfire and fresh air. His lips hovered so close she could feel his breath on her cheek. Just when she thought he would kiss her, she landed upright, and he sat back down in his chair, snagging another s’more from the platter.

Dear God. Maddie stood with knees wobbling, breaths shaky and shallow. As she hitched down the sweatshirt and righted herself, Maddie wondered what kind of power Nicholas Holter possessed that his one touch could send her swirling into a melted puddle? She was so doomed. Worse, she was incapable of hating him, even though he was a vulture capitalist scoundrel who would take her whole family down if she couldn’t buck up and face him.

Doris clutched her heart. “True love prevails! Oh, I knew it. You two were meant to be. Destiny.”

Her marshmallows burst into brilliant orange flame, and Doris blew and sputtered and waved them in the air.

The strange spell that had been cast burst as well. In their real story, there was no hope, no destiny. No expectations that love could conquer all the bad stuff in life. There was just Nick’s bitter desire for revenge against the company that he felt sold his grandfather down the river.

Maddie pulled a smoking marshmallow off Doris’s stick and popped it into her mouth. It was charred and burned and crispy on the outside. Just like her heart.

Real life didn’t turn out like a fairy tale, no matter how badly she wanted it to. It wouldn’t bring her true love, or get her father’s health back, or stop this sexy, irresistible man from ruining her family. And the reality of knowing that really sucked.

Book 1: Born to Magic

I live and write in a small village about thirty miles upstate of NYC, and share my home with my wife, Bonnie and our dog Alfie, an apricot poodle.

When I began writing in 1980, I had no idea where I was headed. Since then, I've published thirty-five novels, thirty-three of them with traditional publishers, but I decided I wanted more freedom than the traditional publishers would allow and began a new phase in my life as an Independent Author.

Sci-Fi & fantasy has always been my most favorite genre.   My first novel in the genre, Queen Of Knights was a medieval / historical fantasy and reached #2 on the Amazon.com bestseller lists for historical fantasy and medieval fantasy, and my sci-fi of parallel worlds, The Others, received wide acclaim.

My first Independent novel Angels In Mourning, was my 'homage' to the old time private detective books of the late 40's, 50's and 60's.  I used to love to sneak them from my parents’ night-tables and read them as a young boy.  Angels, is a modern day take on the old style hardboiled detective.  Angels In Mourning won the Amazon.com Book of the Month Reader's Choice Award shortly after it was published.

My most current thriller, The Cured,  was written with Terese Ramin. The idea for this Medical Thriller came shortly after the death of a close friend.  I couldn't help but wonder about the medication....

My previous suspense thrillers are The Hyte Maneuver, (a Literary guild alternate selection); As peace Lay Dying, Conspiracy of Mirrors, And Down will Come Baby, Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep and Shadows.
